Seminar

Every year, the GRDU offers a multidisciplinary seminar for graduate students at the Université de Montréal (in French):

PLU 6022 : Migration, ethnicité, diversité urbaine (Migration, Ethnicity, Urban Diversity)

The seminar addresses methodological and epistemological issues and other questions regarding ethnicity and urban diversity, along with related topics including migration, modes of resettlement, social identity practices, as well as cultural and religious pluralism. More generally, it explores the links between ethnic relationships and other social markers such as class, gender and age.

The goal of the course is to stimulate exchanges between students and professors who are doing research in the field of ethnic studies. In the short term, this seminar facilitates access to human resources that are available in various disciplines. In the long term, it encourages interdisciplinary reflection with regards to theory and methodology in ethnic studies.

This three-credit seminar takes place during the winter semester, with one session being held each week. Each session involves a presentation by a specialized researcher, a debate, or a panel presenation, followed by a general discussion. Participants, including students auditing the seminar, are required to do the readings related to the themes of the course.

Course evaluation will focus on the production of an essay related to a topic covered in the seminar. The topic of the paper will be chosen by the student and approved by the instructor. The term paper will be graded at various stages: research plan, oral presentation, final paper.
